On September 18, 2018, Marvel Studios released the trailer for their upcoming movie: Captain Marvel. This will be the studio’s first full-length film centered around a female superhero and Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson will be playing the lead role of Carol Danvers.
The movie is set to take place in the ‘90s, earlier than any of the other 19 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, except for Captain America, The First Avenger, which takes place during World War II. The trailer begins with Captain Marvel falling through the roof of a Blockbusters, and goes on to show clips of Danvers gradually getting more powerful. Fans of the original comic were especially happy to see her with a helmet and her eyes glowing bright yellow. To the dedicated comic fans, this homage to the comics demonstrates her reaching her full potential, and alludes to what they would refer to as an “epic battle scene.”
Back in July of 2018, Marvel released Ant-Man and the Wasp, their first movie to feature a female hero in the title. Captain Marvel will make history as the first Marvel movie to feature a woman as the main protagonist. According to executive producer Kevin Feige, who is credited to most of the films in the MCU, “Captain Marvel is the most powerful Marvel superhero put to film,” and the fact that she is female doesn’t change anything. Over the years, the character of Captain Marvel has grown to be an empowering one for women and young girls everywhere. Recently, especially after Trump’s inauguration, there’s been a lot of backlash against the idea of feminism. Without getting into politics, it can be said that this modern context will play a role in this upcoming movie. A writer on Medium.com summarizes that “The trailer shows that, underneath all the subtext of feminism and a female superhero, we still have a fun, intriguing premise that can make for a good movie.”
Arguably the best part of the trailer was a 5-second title clip. The words “HER” appeared in gold against a navy background and in a matter of seconds it faded into “A HERO.” Kevin Smith, an actor with a few popular podcasts, said on his podcast Fatman on Batman, “I have been on this best of all possible worlds 48 years and I never saw that coming. Never saw, ‘Oh my god, if you put an ‘O’ on ‘her’ it’s ‘hero’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s breathtaking and brilliant.” And I feel that sums up everyone’s reaction.
After getting a glimpse of her logo at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, fans have been excitedly awaiting this movie. Familiar faces such as a younger Nick Fury and Agent Coulson contributed to the thrill of this long-awaited trailer release. This trailer acts as a first glimpse at what’s to come in the MCU, especially since Captain Marvel is expected to play a prominent role in the forthcoming fourth Avengers movie.
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel will be playing in theaters beginning on March 8, 2019.
